Appeasing the Tiny Traveller – part one

Tuesday, 17 April 2012

International travel with small children immediately conjures up visions of despair for anyone with or without children until you actually do it and realise it’s just not that big a deal. As an expat, I started planning my daughter’s first trip home almost immediately with research and booking months before we left last November. After that trip we refined our lists and “must haves” with experience and her ever changing needs to make the subsequent several international trips a breeze.

The important thing to remember is that with the exception of new things to look at, it’s just another day in your child’s life, no more different to her than any new location, restaurant, etc. You are her favourite person and are alongside her for that entire flight instead of being away at work or wherever, so no matter what she will be thankful. read more …

Parents are still people. Keep on truckin’ to retain a sense of self.

Monday, 9 April 2012

Parenting is more challenging than you think – we hear it all the time, in the office, from our consumers.  And  Dad Jermey (the packhorse Dad!) can vouch for that.  He and his wife have some tips, and advice about how to retain a sense of self – they refuse to become a prisoner of the nursery!

G’day,

We have managed to put the bags out in the spelling paddock for a few months and to be honest it has been great! The last flight we did ended up in an unsavoury war of words with a fellow passenger after he suggested we get off the plane due to our youngest cracking after being on the tarmac for an hour!! read more …

Favorite travel gear in review

Wednesday, 28 March 2012
(Above, in Rome, Italy last year with our trusted Explorer!  We needed good air-filled tires to walk around the Colosseum and to deal with Rome street generally.)

We are traveling a bit less with 3 kids and school schedules, but I am still obsessed with baby travel gear!   I’ve been having fun playing on Pinterest, which I assume is not just a USA phenomenon.  Granted, I still feel like a bit of a Pinterest idiot as I stumble around the site.  I had a lot of fun recently making a board of some of my favorite travel gear so I thought I would share it here.  It is pretty much a summary of a lot of the other things I have written about, but I like looking at everything in one place.  Sorry to people not in the USA as pretty much all the links are from amazon.com.  I could not figure out how to pin things from philandteds.com (like I said, I am still kind of a Pinterest idiot).  And sorry too, I post a lot of these after long days of dealing with my kids.   These long days make complete thought more difficult, which in turn makes even simple things like subject/verb agreement hard.
SO, here is the link to my favorite Pinterest board!  I would love to hear other things you all can’t travel without!

Fun cities to explore with kids-Mexico City!

Wednesday, 29 February 2012

As we are home a bit more with a new baby and a more serious school schedule, I thought it would be fun to outline kid friendly things to do in some of our favorite cities. We do have several trips planned, can’t stay still too long!

First stop in fun cities to explore with kids, Mexico City, Mexico!!

With kids in Mexico City head directly to el Bosque de Chapultepec!! We had an apartment in Zona Rosa, just a short walk from this truly amazing park. The size of Chapultepec makes New York’s Central Park seem like a small community park; Wikipedia tells us it is Latin America’s largest park. Get to the amazing free zoo as soon as you can!

The Chapultepec Zoo is a very impressive zoo with great animal habitats and some rare to see animals like pandas and condors. We also loved the monkeys! Our son was only about a year and a half at the time and in his vocab, all the animals were either doggies, kitties, or birds. read more …
