With the recent WIN by New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup 2015 & as we head into the festive season with the spirit of giving in our hearts, we thought we would share some amazing news around a Rugby for Buggies initiative that both phil&teds and mountain buggy were proud to be a part of.
What is Rugby for Buggies you may ask? Rugby for buggies was a fund raising effort put together by a Mum named Kerri in order to purchase strollers & buggies for Ronald McDonald House. Kerri’s family have been fortunate to use the wonderful facility that is Ronald McDonald house (Auckland) during their numerous trips from Palmerston North to Starship Hospital with their baby boy Jonty. “We have had multiple trips to Auckland’s Starship hospital for his treatment. Ronald McDonald house is an amazing facility which has welcomed our family with open arms, and provided some normality and comfort throughout an extremely tough time for our family.”
Jonty was diagnosed with metastatic chordoma, an extremely rare form of cancer – when he was just 10 weeks old. He’s now 7 1/2 months old and is still fighting hard. Rugby for Buggies is Kerri’s family’s way of giving something back. They saw the need for some new & improved buggies at Ronald McDonald House and set out to fundraise enough money to buy an entire fleet of new buggies for families in need to use. “Upon borrowing one of the house’s buggies to take Jonty on a walk around the neighbouring Auckland domain, we realised that the buggies were in dire need of an upgrade, so we decided to organise a fundraiser in order to replace the house’s fleet of prams”
On the 18th of October 2015 at Massey University, Palmerston North – supporters were encouraged to head over to enjoy a delicious breakfast and watch the Rugby World Cup quarter final match between the All Blacks & France on the big screen and throw a bid on some great prizes up for grabs in the charity auction! The result was stellar! Kerri & the crew were able to smash and exceed their target raising over $16,000 dollars – an effort we think deserves to be celebrated!
Because the Rugby for Buggies effort was able to exceed their main goal, they are now also able to help out Ronald McDonald House Wellington & also Ronald McDonald House Christchurch as well as Ronald McDonald House Auckland. We had a quick chat to an attendee of the Rugby for Buggies breakfast event, a member of the Massey University community who was happy to support such a worthy cause. Ruth Taylor says “We all had a great time at the Rugby for Buggies fundraiser. So many wonderful items had been donated not only from the Manawatu Business district but from all over New Zealand. A special thanks to the Clare family for making us aware of charities like this and for phil&teds and mountain buggy for being so generous. Well done, if I ever hear of anyone talking about strollers I will be sure to point them in the direction of phil&teds! Of course the icing on the cake of the event – a part from the awesome effort & support everyone put in, the All Blacks won!”
At phil&teds we are made up of real people trying to do real things. So when Kerri came knocking on our door how could we resist? Kerri had a plan from the outset – she was on a mission to greatness and what greatness she has achieved. phil&teds have supported this effort by heavily subsidising the purchase of 24 new buggies and accessories to go to Ronald McDonald house. Ronald McDonald house is one of the many authentic, relevant organizations we support. They are simply amazing, providing homes and accommodation around the country to support thousands of families while their critically ill children undergo medical treatment and receive the best medical care in area hospitals. Ronald McDonald House understands the need for families to be together through such tough times, allowing parents to focus on being with their child, helping them to recover and heal faster. Kerri’s story is just one among many, that we feel honoured to be a part of.
